Tiling in Newtown and Enmore: The Local Issues

  • Newtown and Enmore are defined by their terraces, and that shapes nearly every tiling job here in a way a generic page could never capture.
  • Long continuous rows of Victorian terraces run off King Street and Enmore Road, most of them narrow, sharing walls on both boundaries, with no side access at all.
  • Many sit within heritage conservation areas.
  • What that means in practice is that everything, every tile, every bag of adhesive, every bit of demolition waste, comes in and goes out through the front of the house, and the work happens in tight rooms where there is no room to spread out.
  • The job is as much about access and planning as it is about the tiling itself.
  • These terraces are also old, frequently with original timber floors, bathrooms added or rebuilt at the back over the years, and waterproofing that has had a hard life.
  • We work in the constraints of the terrace rather than against them, and plan each job so it runs cleanly in a house where there is nowhere to stage materials except the room you are working in.

Bathroom Tiling and Waterproofing in Terraces

  • The terrace bathroom is the most common job we do around Newtown and Enmore, and it is rarely straightforward.
  • These are tight spaces, often on a suspended timber floor, added to the rear of the house, where the old waterproofing has usually failed.
  • We strip back, confirm the substrate is sound and properly supported, build the falls so water runs to the waste, and lay a continuous membrane to AS 3740 across the floor, up the shower walls and over hobs before any tile is set.
  • In a terrace, a failed wet area does not just damage the bathroom, it tracks into shared walls and the rooms next door, so the waterproofing is the part we never rush.
  • We set the room out so the cuts fall sensibly in a small space and full tiles land where they are seen, which matters more in a compact terrace bathroom than almost anywhere.

Floor and Wall Tiling in Narrow Homes

  • Terrace floors are long and narrow, and any run of tile shows every wave if the floor is not flat.
  • We check levels down the length of the room, address dips and the changes where old and newer floors meet, and set out so the tiles run true along the length of the house.
  • On the original timber-framed floors common here we prepare the substrate properly, using crack isolation where movement is a risk, so the floor holds up.

Working Around No Side Access

  • This is the part that genuinely sets these jobs apart.
  • With no side access and shared boundary walls, we plan delivery, staging and waste removal through the front of the house, protect the hallway and floors the materials pass over, and keep the site tight and tidy in a home where the occupants are often living around the work.
  • It is a way of working we have well sorted after decades in these kinds of houses, and it is what keeps a terrace renovation from turning into chaos.

Kitchen, Courtyard and Repairs

  • Kitchen splashback and floor tiling around Newtown and Enmore covers subway, herringbone, stone and custom layouts, cut neatly around fixtures and cabinetry.
  • Many terraces have a small rear courtyard, and we tile those with slip resistant tiles, correct falls and drainage.
  • For repairs, cracked or drummy tiles, failing grout and leaking showers can often be sorted without redoing a whole room, and we match replacement tiles as closely as the originals allow.

Recent Newtown and Enmore Projects

  • Recent work in the area includes re-waterproofing and retiling a rear bathroom in a narrow Newtown terrace with no side access, where all materials and waste were managed through the front of the house, laying a long run of floor tile down the length of an Enmore terrace after levelling the old floor, and tiling a small rear courtyard.
  • All work is completed by our own licensed tradesmen, not subcontractors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you tile a terrace with no side access? Yes, it is most of what we do around Newtown and Enmore. We plan delivery, staging and waste removal through the front of the house and protect the hallway and floors the materials pass over.

Why does my terrace floor look wavy when tiled? Long narrow terrace floors show every dip, and they often have level changes where old and newer floors meet. We level and set out down the length of the room so the tiles run true.

Can you fix a leaking shower without removing all the tiles? Sometimes. If the membrane is still sound and the issue is failed grout or silicone, we can re-grout and reseal. If the waterproofing has failed, which is common in older terraces, the tiles need to come up to redo it properly.

Do you remove the old tiles? Yes, demolition and removal of old tiles is part of the job, and in a terrace we manage the waste out through the front and keep the place protected.
