Tiler Cronulla

At Leerberg Tiling we specialise in the areas of bathroom tiling, balcony and outdoor tiling, floor and wall tiling, apartment and strata tiling, tile repairs and licensed waterproofing across Cronulla and the surrounding Sutherland Shire beaches. We are a family owned business with over 53 years in the tiling trade, fully licensed and insured, and we do all the work ourselves rather than sending subcontractors. The same team handles your job from the first measure through to the final grout line.

We tile right across the Shire. See our page on tiling across the Sutherland Shire for nearby suburbs, or visit the Leerberg Tiling home page for everything we do.

Tiling in Cronulla: The Local Issues

  • Cronulla is the only true ocean-beach suburb south of the harbour, and it tiles like one.
  • It sits at the tip of the Kurnell peninsula on barrier sand and dune systems, with Hawkesbury sandstone outcropping on the headlands, and it cops the full force of salt off the open ocean.
  • So the tiling work here is defined by two things: relentless salt exposure, and a dense beachside mix of apartments and units close to the water built on sandy ground.
  • A generic page that just swaps a suburb name in cannot tell you that a Cronulla beachfront unit faces conditions a suburb a few kilometres inland never sees.
  • Salt is not a minor detail near the beach.
  • It works away at grout, fixings and waterproofing far faster than it does inland, and it is unforgiving on outdoor and balcony tiling not built for it.
  • The barrier sand under much of Cronulla also makes for sandy substrates that need proper preparation.
  • We tile Cronulla with the salt and the sand in mind.

Balcony and Outdoor Tiling Built for Salt and Surf

  • The balcony is where most Cronulla tiling goes wrong, because standard materials do not last this close to the surf.
  • We use epoxy grouts that resist salt and water rather than cement grout, choose adhesives rated for the exposure, and seal natural stone against salt attack and staining.
  • Before tiling any balcony or terrace we lay an external membrane to AS 4654, establish correct falls to drainage and make sure the outlets carry water away.
  • On an apartment balcony over another unit, getting this right matters, because a salt-degraded balcony leak quickly becomes the neighbour’s problem.

Apartment and Strata Tiling

  • A large part of the work in Cronulla is apartments.
  • The unit bathroom is a tight, fully tiled wet area on a concrete slab, where a waterproofing failure tracks straight into the unit below.
  • We strip back, confirm the substrate, build the falls so water runs to the waste, and lay a continuous membrane to AS 3740 across the floor, up the shower walls and over hobs.
  • Salt degrades older balcony membranes faster here, so balcony and bathroom remediation is common, and we establish where water is getting in, carry out compliant remedial work, and coordinate with the owners corporation and building access.

Floor, Kitchen and Repair Work

  • For houses and units we lay floor and wall tiling, preparing the sandy coastal substrates properly, and kitchen splashbacks cut neatly around fixtures and cabinetry.
  • For repairs, cracked or drummy tiles, salt-eaten grout and leaking showers and balconies can often be sorted without redoing a whole room, and near the beach we are often called to a balcony or wet area where salt has got into the grout and waterproofing.

Recent Cronulla Projects

  • Recent work in Cronulla includes remediating a salt-degraded apartment balcony with a new membrane, epoxy grout and corrected falls, re-waterproofing and retiling a unit bathroom in a beachside block, and tiling a terrace on a sandy substrate with salt-resistant materials.
  • All work is completed by our own licensed tradesmen, not subcontractors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the salt air really affect tiling near the beach? Yes. On the open ocean coast at Cronulla, salt breaks down standard grout, fixings and waterproofing much faster, so on balconies and outdoor areas we use epoxy grout, suitable adhesives and seal stone against salt.

Do you do apartment and strata tiling? Yes, it is a large part of our Cronulla work. We tile unit bathrooms and balconies and carry out compliant strata remediation, working in with owners corporations and building access.

Who pays for balcony waterproofing in a strata building? It depends on the strata plan and by-laws. The membrane is often common property while surface tiles can be the lot owner’s, so a leak investigation to establish the source is the sensible first step.

Can you fix a leaking shower or balcony without removing all the tiles? Sometimes. If the membrane is sound and the issue is failed grout or silicone, we can re-grout and reseal. If the waterproofing has failed, which salt brings on faster here, the tiles need to come up to redo it properly.
