Tiler Bondi

At Leerberg Tiling we specialise in the areas of bathroom tiling, floor and wall tiling, apartment and balcony tiling, tile repairs and licensed waterproofing for homes and units across Bondi, Bronte, Coogee and the eastern beaches. We are a family owned business with over 53 years in the tiling trade, fully licensed and insured, and we do all the work ourselves rather than sending subcontractors. The same team handles your job from the first measure through to the final grout line.

We work right along the coast. See our Eastern Suburbs tiling page, or everything we do at Leerberg Tiling.

Tiling on the Eastern Beaches: The Local Issues

  • The eastern beaches are the harshest tiling environment in Sydney, and that is the thing a generic page can never tell you.
  • Bondi, Bronte and Coogee sit on Hawkesbury sandstone headlands, but the coast here is also capped with wind-blown sand and battered by salt spray and ocean weather straight off the Pacific.
  • Add to that one of the densest concentrations of apartments and art deco units anywhere in the east, and you have a tiling job defined by two things: relentless salt exposure, and a lot of unit, balcony and strata work.
  • The combination is specific to this strip of coast.
  • Salt air is not a minor detail near the beach.
  • It works away at grout, at fixings and at waterproofing far faster than it does inland, and it is unforgiving on outdoor and balcony tiling that was not built for it.
  • The dune sand that caps the sandstone here also makes for sandy, loose substrates in some spots that need proper preparation.
  • We tile the eastern beaches with the salt and the substrate in mind.

Balcony and Terrace Tiling Built for Salt and Surf

  • The balcony is where most eastern beaches tiling goes wrong, because standard materials do not last in this environment.
  • We use epoxy grouts that resist salt and water rather than cement grout that breaks down quickly near the surf, choose adhesives rated for the exposure, and seal natural stone against salt attack and staining.
  • Before tiling any balcony or terrace we lay an external membrane to AS 4654, establish correct falls to drainage and make sure the outlets actually carry water away.
  • On an apartment balcony that sits over another unit, getting this right is critical, because a salt-degraded balcony leak quickly becomes the neighbour’s problem and the owners corporation’s problem.

Apartment and Unit Bathroom Tiling

  • The unit bathroom is one of the most common jobs we do around Bondi, Bronte and Coogee.
  • These are tight, fully tiled wet areas, usually on a concrete slab in a multi-storey or art deco building, where a waterproofing failure tracks straight into the unit below.
  • We strip back, confirm the substrate, build the falls so water runs to the waste, and lay a continuous membrane to AS 3740 across the floor, up the shower walls and over hobs before any tile goes on.
  • In an apartment the waterproofing is the part that matters most.

Strata and Balcony Remediation

  • A large part of the work on the eastern beaches is strata, and balcony and bathroom leaks are one of the most common and most disputed strata maintenance issues, made worse here by salt degrading older balcony membranes.
  • We establish where the water is actually getting in, then carry out compliant remedial waterproofing and retiling, working in with the owners corporation, strata manager and building access.
  • We keep the site clean and protected throughout, which matters in an occupied beachside block.

Floor, Wall and Kitchen Tiling

  • Beyond the apartments we tile houses and semis across the beaches, laying floor and wall tiles, kitchen splashbacks and floors.
  • We check and prepare substrates before laying, including the sandy substrates found in some beachside spots, set out so cuts fall evenly and large format tiles sit flat, and cut splashbacks neatly around power points and cabinetry.

Tile Repairs

  • Cracked or drummy tiles, failing grout, salt-eaten joints and leaking showers and balconies can often be repaired without redoing a whole room.
  • We replace damaged tiles to match as closely as we can, renew grout with salt-resistant product where it is exposed, and reseal so the surface stays watertight.
  • Near the beach we are often called to sort out a balcony or wet area where salt has got into the grout and waterproofing, and we assess whether a repair will hold or whether the area needs stripping and redoing.

Recent Bondi, Bronte and Coogee Projects

  • Recent work on the eastern beaches includes remediating and retiling a salt-degraded apartment balcony in Bondi with a new membrane, epoxy grout and corrected falls, re-waterproofing and retiling a unit bathroom in an art deco block where a leak was tracking below, and retiling a beachside terrace in Coogee with salt-resistant materials.
  • All work is completed by our own licensed tradesmen, not subcontractors.

Areas We Service

  • Leerberg Tiling service Bondi, Bondi Beach, North Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Clovelly, Coogee, Waverley and the surrounding eastern beaches.
  • We work on apartments, art deco units, strata buildings, houses and semis across the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the salt air really affect tiling near the beach? Yes. Salt breaks down standard grout, fixings and waterproofing much faster near the surf, so on balconies and outdoor areas we use epoxy grout, suitable adhesives and seal stone against salt.

Do you do apartment and strata tiling? Yes, it is a large part of our beachside work. We tile unit bathrooms and balconies and carry out compliant strata remediation, working in with owners corporations and building access.

Who pays for balcony waterproofing in a strata building? It depends on the strata plan and by-laws. The membrane is often common property while surface tiles can be the lot owner’s, so a leak investigation to establish the source is the sensible first step, and we can do the remedial work either way.

Can you fix a leaking shower or balcony without removing all the tiles? Sometimes. If the membrane is still sound and the issue is failed grout or silicone, we can re-grout and reseal. If the waterproofing has failed, which salt exposure brings on faster here, the tiles need to come up to redo it properly.
